El ascenso económico de la familia Brooks Despaigne en Santiago de Cuba (1838-1865)

Abstract

Los Brooks Despaigne constituyeron una de las numerosas familias fundadas por inmigrantes que se establecieron en la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba desde la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Integrada por progenitores de origen británico y jamaicano que poseían un considerable poder adquisitivo, e hijos nacidos en la Isla, la familia se destacó por su incursión en la actividad comercial santiaguera. El padre, Tomás Brooks instituyó en 1838 una compañía comercial titulada Wright Brooks y Cía. la cual les reportó importantes beneficios. Posteriormente, de manera paulatina, surgieron bajo la dirección de Brooks otras casas mercantiles como Tomás Brooks y Cía. (1845) y Brooks y Cía. (1852), que significaron la principal fuente de ingresos de la familia. Estas compañías comerciales se caracterizaron por su gran influencia en la dinámica mercantil santiaguera, sus amplias transacciones económicas y su creciente prosperidad. A la última de ellas se incorporaron los hijos varones mayores quienes progresivamente ostentaron la dirección de la misma.

The Brooks Despaigne constituted one of the several families been founded by immigrants that settled down in the city of Santiago de Cuba from the first half of the XIX century. It was integrated by progenitors original from Great Britain and Jamaica who had a considerable purchasing power, and children that were born in the Island. The family was recognized by their incursion in the santiaguera commercial activity. In such a way, the father, Thomas Brooks instituted in 1838 a society titled Wright Brooks and Co. which reported them important benefits. Later on, in a gradual way, other mercantile houses arose under the direction of Brooks as Thomas Brooks and Co. (1845) and Brooks and Co. (1852) these meant the family´s main source of incomes. These commercial companies were characterized by their great influence in the santiaguera dynamics mercantile, their wide economic transactions and their growing prosperity. The older male children incorporated to the last of the companies and they progressively managed it.
