Arquitectura Art Decó en los barrios obreros de Santiago de Cuba
Abstract
En la primera mitad del siglo XX se produce en la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba la
asimilación paulatina de los códigos modernos, destacándose como punto de
partida de este proceso la manifestación del estilo Art Decó. Esta arquitectura se
manifestó en edificaciones con funciones diversas, así como en diferentes
sectores urbanos destinados a distintas clases sociales, lo que queda evidenciado
por el considerable número de inmuebles que se observan en la ciudad de manera
general.
En los barrios obreros de la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba la arquitectura Art Decó
manifiesta un alto grado de deterioro y transformación, incidiendo en la pérdida de
integridad de estas obras a consecuencia del desconocimiento de los rasgos y
valores de este patrimonio. Por ello, en la presente investigación se realiza la
caracterización de las edificaciones en este contexto, determinando los aspectos
de similitud y divergencias de la misma, dando continuidad a los estudios
precedentes realizados en el sector más antiguo de la ciudad y en los repartos
ocupados por la burguesía santiaguera. Esto contribuye a la divulgación de los
rasgos identitarios del estilo y a la promoción de acciones encaminadas a su
conservación.
La investigación partió de definir los aspectos que condicionaron el surgimiento y
desarrollo del Art Decó en Europa, América Latina y Cuba, haciendo énfasis en la
ciudad objeto de estudio. También se realizó un análisis de los principales
referentes bibliográficos, lo que permitió valorar las diferentes posturas asumidas
por distintos autores que tratan la temática. Las tres zonas donde se llevó a cabo
el análisis son: San Pedrito, Mariana de la Torre y Veguita de Galo. Este se enfocó
al estudio de las soluciones formales a nivel de fachada. Se realiza para ello, un
inventario detallado de las edificaciones, según el grupo funcional al que
pertenece: vivienda o edificio público. In the first half of the 20th century, the city of Santiago de Cuba produced the
gradual assimilation of modern codes, standing out as a point of departure from this process the manifestation of the Art Deco style. This architecture is manifested itself in buildings with diverse functions, as well as in different urban sectors intended for different social classes, which is evidenced due to the considerable number of properties that can be seen in the city so general.
In the working-class neighborhoods of the city of Santiago de Cuba, Art Decó architecture manifests a high degree of deterioration and transformation, affecting the loss of integrity of these works as a result of ignorance of the features and
values of this estate. For this reason, in the present investigation the
characterization of the buildings in this context, determining the aspects
of similarity and divergences of the same, giving continuity to the studies
precedents made in the oldest sector of the city and in the distributions
occupied by the Santiago bourgeoisie. This contributes to the dissemination of
identity features of the style and the promotion of actions aimed at its
conservation.
The research started by defining the aspects that conditioned the emergence and
development of Art Deco in Europe, Latin America and Cuba, emphasizing the
city under study. An analysis of the main bibliographic references, which allowed us to assess the different positions assumed by different authors dealing with the subject. The three areas where it took place analysis are: San Pedrito, Mariana de la Torre and Veguita de Galo. This was focused to the study of formal solutions at the façade level. For this, a detailed inventory of buildings, according to the functional group to which belongs: housing or public building.
